Let’s Chat Disability

Makenzie is an ambulatory mobility aid user, rotating between a cane, forearm crutches, and a manual wheelchair depending on the activity, day, and even what works best for the character she is playing.

She has what is considered “Dynamic Disability”, meaning her symptoms can vary drastically day by day. However, when using mobility aids, Makenzie’s movement can be vibrant, quick, and expressive! In Spring 2024, Makenzie had the pleasure of performing 19 year old Libby in the disability-informed Off-Broadway production of “I Ought To Be In Pictures” by Neil Simon. Libby’s character was not originally written to be disabled, but with the use of a manual wheelchair and a cane, Makenzie brought this spunky character to life.

She is able to walk and move without mobility aids for shorter stints, and she typically does not have a significant limp when doing so. However, her overall movement without mobility aids appear smaller and slower, and the duration of her stamina is limited. This can be mitigated some with creative blocking that includes leaning on set pieces or incorporating periodic sitting on set furniture.

Makenzie is very open to discussing the possibilities, answering questions, and collaborating with creative teams to dream together on how to achieve their vision while incorporating her needed accommodations.

Together, disability-informed artistry will be made!
